Good drivers actually save fuel and wear and tear on brake linings by watching ahead for traffic lights, intersections and obstacles, and adjusting their speed accordingly. Just life your foot off the accelerator pedal and slow the momentum as you approach that red light or stop sign, rather than approaching at speed and jamming on the brakes at the last moment. Children and animals can be particularly dangerous distractions – if you let them. Small children should be strapped into a child seat for their own safety. (It also sets them up for good habits about use of seat belts later in life). Pets can also be restrained. Older children can be taught not to distract the driver. I remember my father would occasionally pull over to the side of the road and tell my siblings (never me of course) that if they continue to misbehave, they can get out and walk. Once he actually put is all out of the car (why me? I was not doing anything!) within sight of our aunts house, which was where we were going. The message is parents can teach their children from a young age to behave while in the back seat.

The best way to become a good driver is to practice and practice being a better driver. Defensive driving courses are well worth the extra investment too. They teach the driver to assume all other road users, vehicles, motorbikes, cyclists, pedestrians may suddenly do unexpected, unpredictable swerves and stops. They are a potential threat to your safety and life. What is first learned consciously, in the pre-frontal cortex becomes an unconscious habitual behavior, so starting with good habits is easier than having to relearn later down the track.
