Treatment of ADHD begins at home. All children need structure. They seek firm and consistent rules with expectations, and rewards for a job well done. This is important because structure and consistent expectations teach your child boundaries for other people and society in general.
Firstly, you should recognise that ADHD is not a disease. The basis of the challenge is usually because different people have different preferred learning and communications styles. If someone is predominantly kinaesthetic, auditory or digital, then visual methods just wont make the grade. They may become bored and disruptive.
They can develop their visual learning style with practice, perhaps using games and activities. Or they can better use their auditory, kinaesthetic or digital abilities better, with fun, play practice.
Take careful note of the activities your child can fully focus upon, without becoming fidgity and distracted. Then teach him or her to transfer and expand that limited ‘mind state’ of thoughts and feelings on to other activities, slowly, step-by-step.
In other words, encourage them to transfer their skill set to a wider range of activities.
Another influencing factor is diet, and sugar addiction. Yes, I said addiction. It is the unseen plague in our society because refined sugar is cheap, legal, and plentiful – it is everywhere and in almost everything. yet refined sugar is very addicting.
The ADHD diet should include;
- High protein foods
- Foods with complex B vitamins
- Iron rich foods
- Probiotic foods
- Eggs and chicken
- Fish and omega 3 foods
Several studies show that fish oil and cod liver oil have been very effective in the treatment of ADHD.
Avoid these foods like the plague.

Refined (white) sugar is a major challenge with ADHD because it causes blood-sugar spikes, which then cause concentration levels to drop when the blood-sugar spikes drop — which then cause lack of focus. This will cause hyperactivity behaviour.
