Compulsive exercise is characterised by a craving for physical training, resulting in uncontrollable excessive exercise activity with potential harmful consequences.
Evaluating the ‘safe’ level is generally difficult, however these following questions will give a clear picture of where you are on the exercise scale and the potential of health threats:
- Do you feel guilty if you miss a routine workout?
- When you are injured or unwell do you still manage to exercise?
- Have you ever turned-down social invites with friends or family because of your exercise routine commitments?

Compulsive or excessive exercise is associated with perfectionism, neuroticism, narcissism, obsessive compulsive disorder and eating disorders. The most prominent negative consequences are physical injuries, social impairment, and depression.
The six criteria of compulsive exercise are:
- Salience – the exercise becomes the most important thing in life.
- Conflict – refers to conflicts between the addicted person and those around him/her.
- Euphoria – the subjective experience of a “buzz” or a “high” caused by endorphins, including dopamine, adrenaline during exercise.
- Tolerance – increasing amounts of the exercise are needed to achieve the same psychological effects.
- Withdrawal symptoms – unpleasant feelings, such as irritability and guilt when the exercise is reduced or stopped.
- Relapse – reversion to earlier, extreme patterns of exercise when trying to cut down on exercise.
- Extreme or compulsive exercise is dangerous. The most significant dangers of extreme exercise are overuse syndromes such as stress fractures, low heart rate, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis.
- Stress fractures are micro-fractures of the bone,
- Bradycardia, or low heart rate,
- Amenorrhea results from significant and rapid weight loss.
- Eating disorders.
- Supplements and drug use to get the edge, including steroids.
The fitness industry has a vested interest in promoting body image, body wellness, accomplishment and achievement in their lives. Generally, that is a very positive thing and should be supported.
However some people take it too far, they don’t know when enough is enough, and they risk doing themselves harm.

- a place to belong
- a way to build self-esteem
- a ‘perfect’ body is the ideal
- exercise creates a “high”

- only undergo weight loss if it will boost performance
- accept weight gain if it is caused by muscle development, because it aids performance

These eating disorders may include;
Bulimia Nervosais a serious psychiatric illness typified by recurring binge-eating episodes (the consumption of abnormally large amounts of food in a relatively short period of time). Binge events are associated with a sense of loss of control and immediately followed by feelings of guilt and shame, which then leads the person to compensatory behaviours such as self-induced vomiting, fasting, excessive exercise and/or the misuse of laxatives, enemas or diuretics.
Anorexia Nervosa is a psychological illness with devastating physical consequences. Anorexia is characterised by low body weight and a body image distortion with an obsessive fear of gaining weight, which manifests itself through depriving the body of food. It often coincides with increased levels of exercise.
The synonyms for the word compulsive include; enthusiastic, passionate, irresistible, compelling, urgent and overwhelming.
The synonyms for the word excessive include; disproportionate, exaggerated, excoriate, extravagant, extreme, inordinate, needless, redundant, superfluous, unconscionable, unreasonable, boundless, dissipated, dizzying, immoderate, indulgent, intemperate, limitless, more, overboard, overkill, plethoric, prodigal, profligate, self-indulgent, sky-high, stratospheric, superstar, too many, unbounded, unmeasurable and way out.
