Fear exists to protect us from threats and danger. It drives the fight or flight instinct. Phobia’s are irrational fears.
The fear of doctors is an irrational fear within the unconscious mind, a phobia called Iatrophobia. Patients suffering from this phobia tend to put off going to the doctor, although they are suffering pain and discomfort.
Synonyms of the word phobia include; anxiety, aversion, distaste, dread, loathing, obsession, panic, resentment, revulsion, avoidance, detestation, disgust, dislike, fear, hatred, irrationality, neurosis, repulsion and terror.
The negative emotion of fear has been created by your unconscious mind to protect you from threats and danger.
The symptoms of a phobia may include;
- extreme anxiety
- shortness of breath
- rapid breathing
- irregular heartbeat
- excessive sweating
- dry mouth
- confused thoughts
- inability to articulate words or sentences
- a desire to run-away
These feelings are very real for the sufferer because the unconscious mind has activated the instinctive fear reaction.
While the logical and analytical conscious mind knows visiting doctors if a health measure, even survival. Meanwhile the unconscious mind never-the-less reacts as if doctors are a threat.
The logical and analytical conscious part of the mind knows that doctors are there to help us overcome pain and disease, while the emotional unconscious mind fears something. Perhaps it is possible ‘bad news’, or admitting private issues to an authority figure, such as a doctor? Maybe doctors remind people of ‘bad’ childhood experiences?
Abreactions are strong, often disturbing emotional and even physical reactions to something re-experienced from the past, as if real. An abreaction could re-traumatize rather than achieve the desired healing, particularly if there is no experienced therapist present to ‘rescue’ the patient (when listening to an MP3 at home for example). The old way to treat phobia’s was called ‘desensitisation’. It involved exposing the sufferer to the very thing that triggered their fear, over and over again. It risked s the patient, or making the problem even worse. The technique was expensive, time-consuming and often unsuccessful. However some therapists still use this archaic method.
When we experience repeated negative emotions and we accompany those with negative self-talk we imprint our unconscious mind with negativity which results in the creation of self-limiting beliefs. These can lead to ‘bad’ habits of behaviour, and so the cycle continues.
Now, imagine what happens when we replace the negative self-talk and emotions with positive affirmations. New self-empowering thoughts and beliefs can result in ‘good’ habits and behaviours and so the cycle continues.
That is all very good in theory, and it can be that simple for some people. For others the negative self-limiting beliefs and habits can be so entrenched it takes more than positive affirmations to ‘break-though’ the negativity
