The fear of spiders is an irrational fear within the unconscious mind, a phobia called Arachnophobia or arachnephobia. It may also apply to other arachnids such as scorpions.

The synonyms of the word fear include; anger, anxiety, concern, despair, dismay, doubt, dread, horror, jitters, panic, scare, suspicion, terror, unease, worry, abhorrence, agitation, aversion, consternation, creeps, distress, foreboding, fright, misgiving, nightmare, phobic, qualm, revulsion, timidity, tremor, trepidation, cold feet and cold sweats.

The negative emotion of fear has been created by your unconscious mind to protect you from threats and danger. Obviously, people fear being bitten by spiders. They see all spiders as dangerous.

The symptoms of a phobia may include;

In the past therapists used archaic exposure methods called ‘desensitisation’, which were designed to cause strong abreactions in sufferers.

The theory, which often did not work, was that contant exposure to photo’s, dead spiders and live spiders would overcome the fear response. the result was often very traumatic and uncomfortable.

Another approach was to just talk about it, for hours at a time, day after day, week after week. Therapists made a fortune from all this talking, but it did little, if anything, for the sufferer.

Abreactions are strong, often disturbing emotional and even physical reactions to something re-experienced from the past, as if real. The old way to treat phobia’s was called ‘desensitisation’. It involved exposing the sufferer to the very thing that triggered their fear, over and over again. It risked re-traumatizing the patient, or making the problem even worse. The technique was expensive, time-consuming and often unsuccessful. However some therapists still use this archaic method.

I once had a very timid lady come to see me for her spider phobia. The phobia was so server for her that she would not leave the house. So when she came to see me her husband escorted her, just in case there were spiders in my garden.

At one point in the therapy I reached for something. She screamed and ran out of the room. Her husabd went after her, finding her some distance away in the street cowering in terror.

When she eventually returned she explained that other therapists had used photos, plastic spiders and dead spiders as a so called ‘desensitisation’ technique, that had only caused her further trauma.

The day after her one session with me she phoned to tell me that following her session she and her husband had gone out to an Indian resturant for dinner. She realised that not only had they not gone out to dinner in a very long time, because of the phobia. But she had walked past bushes that could have housed spiders, without a care. She noticed cracks in the resturant ceiling, which in the past would have sent her runninga way, because they could have contained spiders. Now her phobia was 100% gone and she did not care about spiders at all.

Most, if not all spider phobia challenges can respond well to one-on-one psychotherapy tailored to the individual, using Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), hypnotherapy and perhaps cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
