Description
‘Eidetic memory (/aɪˈdɛtɪk/ eye-DET-ik😉 is commonly called photographic memory. It is an ability to recall an image from memory after seeing it only once, with high precision for a brief time afterward. Although the terms eidetic memory and photographic memory are popularly used interchangeably, they can be distinguished. Eidetic memory refers to the ability to view memories like photographs for a short time, while photographic memory refers to the ability to recall pages of text or numbers, or similar, in great detail for longer’, according to Wikipedia.
Eidetic memory is controlled primarily by the posterior parietal cortex of the parietal lobe of the brain. This is the part of the brain through which visual stimuli are processed, and images retained. Most people have an eidetic memory as children, then the ability fades to the point where it only lasts for a few seconds.

Photographic memory is the ability to recall an image for a much longer period. With a photographic memory, the eidetic memory is transferred to the short-term memory banks for storage, allowing it to be recalled much later.
Synonyms for the words photographic memory include; eidetic imagery, exercise of memory, recollection, total memory
“I know a man, aged 30, who went completely (100%) blind about 2 years ago. He is a Registered Nurse and a language teacher and has the ability to ‘see’, ‘read’ and interpret in his mind’s eye, tables, and charts which have been previously read out to him. In other words, lists of numbers etc are read to him and then he can ‘see’ the whole image in his mind. Then he can ‘look’ across the lists of the image and interpret the data,” said Peter Zapfella.. He thinks this ability has been enhanced by his blindness.
My friend has a photographic memory because he can recall in the long term (years after the event) names, dates (who said what etc just as the character Sheldon Cooper in the TV series ‘Big Bang Theory’) and create in his mind diagrams and charts according to information he has gathered non visually. To we mere mortal and sighted people his ability seems superhuman. The character Sheldon Cooper in the TV series ‘Big Bang Theory’ claims in error to have an Eidetic memory (see video). However, this is more likely a script writers’ error, as it conflicts with the science and confuses people even further. My friend has this ability without the (high and lofty) attitude of Sheldon Cooper. he thinks his ability is normal, and nothing special.
“One group of researchers studied the memoirs and histories of several people, including Charles Darwin, who claimed to have photographic memories. Their studies led to the conclusion that the ability of photographic memory is directly related to intelligence. However, another study done about eidetic memory had opposite results” , according to an article by Nicole Beasley in Better Help.com
Another proven method of memory is the use of mnemonics and other, non-eidetic memory-enhancing exercises, such as association or chunking. . Technically speaking, to constitute photographic or eidetic memory, the visual recall must persist without the use of mnemonics, expert talent, or other cognitive strategies.
The following are 20 practical things you can do to learn quickly.
When I was learning how to perform my Comedy Hypnosis Show, based on the script I had written myself I consulted an actress who taught me the techniques she used to remember her acting lines. These same methods of learning can be applied to almost anything.
- The first involved drawing little images on my script that linked to the key words I needed to remember.
It is an advanced memory technique that works really well, although it takes longer to put it together. Link two words or concepts together with a picture that involves both of them.
If I wanted to memorize a name such as Catherine A picture could be a cat, maybe with her face on it.
2. Visualisation is creating movies and images in the mind, usually of the outcome you most want. See it in the mind, maybe the parts coming together one by one to create the whole. Repeat until you remember it and can do it. I teach this method to sports people.
3. Rote memorisation involves hammering the mind with information over and over. Thats how I tried to learn to recite poetry in school. It did not work very well for me.
4. Interlinking. You take two ideas and find how they inter-relate. Create a roadmap in your mind to connect them as if they are roads and highways between towns and cities.
5. Metaphor is a concept I use with my clients regularly. In order to explain an idea or concept I tell a related story that shows a potential path forward. It promotes deep understanding of a given situation and provides various options to deal with it.
8. I have sometimes used diagrams to explain concept here on Internet Hypnosis dot Shop. ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ Diagrams are a step beyond simple visualisations.
9. Note Taking. I think I have taken down copious notes in every class and lecture I have ever attended, while others sit and listen and forget what they were told. Of course, note taking is a wasted effort if you don’t go back and review it and understand it. However, I think taking notes helps one retain information at the same time as writing because you are focused and in the zone – no time to daydream and wander off (They have a name for that. It’s called ADHD).
10. Mnemonics or Acronyms are a popular way to learn lists. Good for tests and examinations. I think they are of limited value in the real world because you should know it by then, without relying on those memory triggers. How many musicians look at a page of music and say “Ummm, Let me see. Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit” in an attempt to remember music notes on a page? Not one musician does that because they know it without thinking.
11. Peg Method is used to remember a sequence of numbers. It is a system of phonetics to remember digits. The method uses short words or sentences to encode numbers. I am a member of a club where the front gate combination lock uses a series of numbers based on a word. So a =1, b = 2, c =3, and so on. Just as they appear on a phone keypad. Remember the word and you can work out the combination lock numbers.
12. Zoom and Check. This is great of revision. It involves quickly flipping through information, perhaps your lesson notes or textbooks and sorting for new information only. Skip past what you already know. Look for new information that you do not already know.
13. Test. Revise previous tests and examination questions. Have a classmate test your knowledge. Learn what you need to learn.
14. Anthropomorphising is comparing to something else. Plumbing apprentices are taught to imagine water as if it is electricity flowing through wires. Electrical apprentices are taught to imagine electricity as if it is water flowing through pipes.
15. This could also be a form of Leveraging. That is, taking a concept you already understand and comparing it to another.
16. Brainstorming is bouncing off another individual or a group. Multiple minds can conceptualise better than one. How many classes have you been in that broke off into workshops where you then had to present your findings and results at the end? Each group is then in effect sharing with the whole class, so everyone benefits from every concept.
17. Mindstorming is the same thing except you are doing it yourself. Write down all your thoughts and ideas and make sense of it later. Just get it out of your grey matter and on to paper quickly without letting logic get in the way.
18. Song. We remember the words of a song when we put a melody to it. Adapt a tune to the text and you will remember it forever.
19. Teach it. The best way to learn something is to teach it. You force yourself to study and know the subject inside out. I am doing it right now with you.
20. Just one more and that’s enough. I could go on and on with dozens more, some better than others. Immersion. Learn far more than you will ever need to know by immersing yourself into the subject as if it is your (short term) passion. For example. Some people I know have spent years trying to learn Morse Code (send and receive) at a speed of 10 words per minute. They struggle because they spend say, 60 minutes a week in one 60 minute stretch, then forget it for the rest of the week. By the time they come back to it they have no progressed at all. (Thats 52 hours per year). I am planning to learn Morse Code through an intensive course which involves 30 minutes daily x 7 days a week x 8 weeks. (Total 28 hours) The result is 20 words a minute send and receive. Then bring the speed back to a reasonable 10 to 15 words. You’ve done learning in half the time. You know it within 8 weeks while others struggle for a year or perhaps years.
There are many other techniques for learning, many are relevant to what it is you want to learn. So go with the best techniques relevant to what you want. The secret is focus and repetition whatever methods you choose to use.

Just like Homer Simpson, we can choose between the ‘good’ decisions or the ‘bad’ decisions in life. These decisions are driven by our deepest unconscious beliefs. Our deep unconscious beliefs drive our behaviors. We call automatic behaviors – habits.
“You don’t become what you want, you become what you believe.”
Oprah
It is those ‘bad’ habits that can lead to poor memory, by constantly affirming you have a ‘bad’ memory. Imagine if you could create a new ‘good’ habit by believing in your memory ability, and practicing it daily?
The ‘Welcome’ subliminal affirmations are a resource which deliver targeted messages to your deep unconscious up to 1200 times a day. That’s powerful enough to change deep unconscious thinking, therefore beliefs and behaviors!
The more the Welcome A Photographic Memory messages are repeated over and over, the more they are uncritically accepted by the deep unconscious. You could listen to the ‘Theta Binaural waves’ or ‘Environmental – Lake waves’ MP3 while sleeping. Or, you could choose to also listen to the ‘Pleasant piano and guitar melody’ and/or the ‘Zumba’ – Latin style dance music during the day.
