There are countless reasons why we do it. For some it starts in early childhood when we wanted to be picked up by a parent or other loved one and reassured. Instead of hugging us they gave us something to eat. With repetition, that actually taught us that food gives us nurture feelings.

Another reason is that some foods contain chemical elements that cause our brains to feel emotions. So, it makes total sense to eat the foods that make us feel good. For example,

Serotonin controls our moods. It is causing our happiness. It also helps us to regulate our sleep, clear thinking, and sexual desire. Put simply, when depressed, anxious or fearful we find sleep difficult, we become forgetful and we are not interested in sex.

Serotonin is manufactured by the body’s nerve cells. It is formed during a chemical reaction involving a protein called tryptophan.

Dopamine causes us to feel pleasure. Dopamine is responsible for allowing you to feel satisfaction and be motivated to do things. Dopamine also has a role in influencing our memory, mood, sleep, learning, concentration and physical movement.

Dopamine has a role to play in addiction too. Why would you get addicted to alcohol and drugs just to get your dopamine fix when you can get dopamine as a result of eating watermelon and strawberries?

Unfortunately, chemists who study addiction are inclined to focus so much on the role of dopamine they forget all the other causes. They tend to overstate its role in addiction.

Oxytocin makes us feel love. Oxytocin is important for the brain to help us bond and build loving relationships. It promotes feelings of trust and empathy and helps mothers to bond with their baby after childbirth. It also makes people feel sexually aroused.

Prolactin enhances our sexual pleasure. Also known as lactotropin it allows women to produce milk for their babies. Elevated levels of prolactin decrease the levels of sex hormones—estrogen in women. (No wonder nursing mothers lose interest in sex)

Prolactin has important roles in strengthening our immune system.  Prolactin is secreted from the pituitary gland in response to eating, mating, estrogen treatment, ovulation and nursing.  Some people have difficulty getting the balance right, so there are certain foods to assist either too little or too much.

Cholecystokinin suppresses our appetite.  It is a hormone secreted by cells in the duodenum of our digestive system. It stimulates the release of bile and digestive enzymes which suppress hunger.

When people try to manipulate their negative emotional states using food this coping mechanism can become habitual. Then emotional eating become THE problem.

But we must eat, so it makes sense to eat healthy food, so we are both physically and mentally healthy too. While at the same time avoiding the foods that we know are harmful in the long term to our overall health.

Eating does not address the real issues – the causes. It only deals with the symptoms. So, the causes just continue to push, push, push.

For some people, this cycle of turning to food to cope creates other negative feelings such as guilt and shame. So, the cycle continues.
