The secret to freedom from pain relies upon the Gate Theory which says that the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS) are more than just a collection of nerves passively collecting nociceptive information from around the body.
Instead, our nervous systems are dynamic and changing. The CNS and PNS continually amplify or inhibit the signals that the brain interprets as pain. In other words, we are able to decrease or increase pain messages before they reach the brain.
