Description
Lateral thinking is a creative process of problem-solving that does not use traditional step-by-step logic. The standard approach is ‘vertical’ while lateral thinking is ‘horizontal’.
In the diagram above I have shown vertical thinking of one concept (A) to the logical next (B). Next are the lateral thinking steps, whereby one thinks or moves across (from A) laterally (to C). The result is a whole new solution (C) to the former challenge (A). Dynamic Lateral Thinking moves across (from A) laterally the same as lateral thinking (to C)) then vertically up to (D).
Lateral thinking is a Trade Mark term coined in 1967 by Edward de Bono, a Maltese psychologist, physician, and writer. He defines it as a technique of problem-solving by approaching problems indirectly at diverse angles.
Lateral thinking is a way of thinking that seeks a solution to an intractable problem through unorthodox methods that would normally be ignored by logical thinking. Rather than thinking and working harder, you can start to think and work smarter for a much better result. You can ‘reprogram your mind’ to use lateral thinking, across a challenge, to ‘go with the flow’, rather than swim ‘against the tide’ of life.
These are the usual Lateral Thinking step-by-step processes.
Alternatives: How to use concepts as a breeding ground for new ideas. Sometimes we do not look beyond the obvious alternatives.
Focus: When and how to change the focus of your thinking. You will learn the discipline of defining your focus and sticking to it.
Challenge: Breaking free from the limits of traditional thinking. With challenges, we act as though the present way of doing things is not necessarily the best.
Random Entry: Using unconnected input to open up new lines of thinking.
Provocation and Movement: Generating provocative statements and using them to build new ideas.
Harvesting: Capturing your creative output. At the end of a creative-thinking session, we normally only take note of the specific ideas that seem practical and have obvious value.
Treatment of Ideas: How to develop ideas and shape them to fit an organization or situation.
Here are some examples of lateral thinking in practice. More and more human service businesses are discovering the advantages of giving their staff more ‘free time’. First came ‘flexi-time’ where-by people could choose their daily start and end times at work to allow for family commitments, while still ‘clocking-up’ the same total number of hours worked. The result was happier workers with increased production.
Now employers are giving their workers a paid day off work, mid-week. Usually Wednesday, and finding they are achieving as much or more by working Monday and Tuesday, then taking a break and returning to work on Thursday and Friday than they did working a straight through five or six days a week.
Workers return feeling refreshed and they value their job more. A happier work-place and turn-over of employees is reduced, while production has increased at the same time. (In the seaside resort town where I grew up as a boy all the business, including supermarkets and hairdressers, closed every Wednesday afternoon. Shop owners could then visit their suppliers. Then they remained open all day on Saturday to better serve weekend tourists. The result was better profits.)
Currently, at my sisters television production studios for 3ABN Australia, They go home at lunch time on Fridays. Another business I know take all the staff to lunch on Fridays, and then they start their weekend. Each employee takes turns to ‘host’ the company lunch at a restaurant of their choosing. This builds team work/bonding and satisfaction. Staff turnover has been reduced to zero.
- Identify the dominant ideas that polarize the perception of the challenge.
- Research different ways to look at processes.
- Relax rigid control to encourage innovation.
- Use chance to encourage new ideas.
- Develop better idea generation and problem-solving ability.
- Gain advantage by being vastly more innovative.
- Constructively challenge current thinking and see new opportunities.

Some critics argue that ‘lateral thinking’ is just previously developed concepts of “convergent thinking” and “divergent thinking”
Convergent Thinking psychology holds that all human beings possess it, but some people develop in a different way. Depending on a given situation every human being puts this type of thinking into action. It seeks only one correct answer to a question or problem or a specific situation.
Divergent thinking is the ability to discover relationships between ideas, concepts, and processes that initially appear to lack any similarity. Creativity psychologists tell us people have different mental networks of association: Those people who have “steep” semantic networks are more logistical and analytical.
People with “flat” semantic networks have mental networks can better relate two things to each other that do not appear to make sense. Other networks contribute and ingenious ideas result. Perhaps people on the autistic spectrum have this ability?

Subliminal affirmations are not a new way to laterally think around a challenge.
Just like Homer Simpson, we can choose between the ‘good’ decisions or the ‘bad’ decisions in life. These decisions are driven by our deepest unconscious beliefs. Our deep unconscious beliefs drive our behaviors. We call automatic behaviors – habits.
It is those ‘bad’ habits that can lead to poor decision making. Imagine if you could create a new ‘good’ habit to problem solve horizontally across, rather than straight up and into trouble? Imagine if the once-off cost of developing this new mental gymnastics was less than $10?
The ‘Welcome’ subliminal affirmations are a resource that deliver targeted messages to your deep unconscious up to 1200 times a day. That’s powerful enough to change deep unconscious thinking, therefore beliefs and behaviors!
The more the Welcome Lateral Thinking messages are repeated over and over, the more they are uncritically accepted by the deep unconscious. If you listen to the Welcome Lateral Thinking MP3 while sleeping, on ‘repeat’ or ‘loop’ your unconscious mind will hear this message almost 400 times every night. You could listen to the ‘Theta Binaural waves’ or ‘Environmental – Lake waves’ MP3 while sleeping. Or, you could choose to also listen to the ‘Pleasant piano and guitar melody’ and/or the ‘Zumba’ – Latin style dance music during the day. Your deep unconscious would then hear the affirmations repeated around 800 – 1200 times, while your logical conscious mind would hear it around 60 – 90 times. That’s powerful because a message repeated enough will become a new unconscious belief.
Also because we all have different listening preferences, Welcome Lateral Thinking has a choice of foreground variants for you to choose from. ‘Click here’ to hear samples.
You can start lateral thinking today by changing that same old/same old thinking and transmuting your thinking across to lateral thinking!
