Welcome Life Beyond Fear of Public Toilets

$9.99$24.97

Do you suffer from a fear and anxiety about the possibility of desperately needing to go, and finding all the stalls are ‘out of order’ or ‘occupied’?

Even worse, you fear the toilet is dirty, blocked and will not flush?

And there is no toilet paper available, and you do not have any alternatives?

Do you worry the public restroom may be overcrowded, so someone else will be waiting just outside the stall door listening?

Perhaps they may be watching because the toilet stalls lack appropriate privacy partitions?

For men, standing at a urinal could mean strangers standing side-by-side, feeling self-conscious and imagining others are stealing glances or staring?

Or as I have done, rushing into the public toilet stall and then realize you are in the wrong gender toilets and must wait for an opportunity to escape without being seen?

Paruresis is the irrational fear of public toilets. It is more intense and worrying than shyness. It sometimes referred to as ‘pee shy’ or ‘bashful bladder’.

It is made worse when the sufferer has a particularly sensitive and vulnerable personality, or the sufferer is particularly anxious, or fearful.

Description

Paruresis (/ˌpɑːrəˈriːsɪs/) pronounced PAR-ə-REE-sis is the irrational fear of public toilets. It is more intense and worrying than shyness. It sometimes referred to as ‘pee shy’or ‘bashful bladder’. The irrational fear of bowel movements being overheard is a different phobia called parcopresis.

Fear of public toilets and restrooms is a social phobia.

Sufferers of the fear of public toilets lifestyles are usually controlled by their fear. They may avoid undertaking long journeys away from home, so they can avoid the possibility of needing to use an unfamiliar facility. The fear can be made worse (panic) if they are suffering from an upset stomach and could need a facility at a moment’s notice.

In some extreme cases a sufferer may avoid leaving their home altogether.  They risk becoming socially isolated.

“It may be just an occasional problem for some, a form of performance anxiety. While for others it becomes a challenge. At school, I remember a friend was unable to urinate at a urinal when flanked by other boys. He would always wait, sometimes uncomfortably, for a stall to be vacated. Then he would wait until everyone had left the toilets before commencing to urinate. It must have been a self-inflicted torture for him. I saved him any further embarrassment by saying nothing,” said Peter Zapfella.

The experience of paruresis may be made worse by the rear of any of the following:

  • the public toilets are unclean and will not flush,
  • the public restroom is overcrowded,
  • no disabled facilities available for those people who need them.
  • the toilet stalls lack appropriate privacy partitions,
  • there is no toilet paper available,
  • the toilet is dirty, blocked or will not flush,
  • someone else is waiting outside the door,
  • you feel as if others are watching or listening,
  • for men, feeling self-conscious while standing at a urinal, imagining others are watching,
  • or the fear of creepy crawly creatures, such as spiders, lurking in the shadows?
Fear of Public Toilets
Welcome Life Beyond Fear of Public Toilets

While any of these can happen, the anticipation and expectation only make it worse. It can elevate into an irrational fear or phobia if,

  • the sufferer has a particularly sensitive and vulnerable personality,
  • the sufferer is particularly anxious, or fearful.

Most people only visit a public restroom if they have a need to go, otherwise they wait. So, remember other people in the restroom are there for the same reason you are there. They are likely concerned about the noises and smells they create, not yours. They have no concern for you, they do not know you and will never see you again – unless you are a celebrity.

Most public restrooms are regularly cleaned and serviced. (Although I was once on a long bus trip in South-east Asia and got off at a stop to use the restrooms. What I saw inside was so disguising I turned around and walked out again without a second thought.) While in some countries you are expected to bring your own paper or buy it from an attendant (Again I have found this to be true in a few Asian countries and no doubt around the world), others supply paper inside a stall. If in doubt, be prepared and carry some spare paper in case of emergencies. (I have learned to always carry some spare paper with me when travelling, even in my own country. You never know if theer will be some available when you need it most.)

Someone is responsible to keep toilets clean and serviced. They should also be aware of any damage to the hardware. If you find a toilet is dirty, blocked or will not flush – report it to the entity responsible. Be proactive.

Toilets are usually mechanical devices featuring water. Things sometimes go wrong. If the entity responsible is aware of the problem they will usually attend to it as fast as possible. So, if you find a broken toilet that is damaged or does not flush – report it. The more people who report it the more urgently it will be repaired.

Of course, your fear reaction and the resulting anxiety may be so strong those actions may not be practical for you. You may be suffering from an irrational fear or phobia? Phobias may feature of any of the following criteria:

  • fear of using public toilets is persistent and on going.
  • the need to use public toilets provokes an immediate anxiety response.
  • adult sufferers recognize that the fear is excessive, unreasonable or irrational (this is not always the case with children) yet they cannot control it.
  • the need to use a public toilet is often avoided altogether or is endured with dread.
  • the fear interferes significantly with daily social, familial, occupational activities including, in some extreme cases, leaving the home.
  • for those aged under 18 the symptoms last at least six months.
  • anxiety, panic attacks or avoidance cannot be accounted for by another mental disorder.

The symptoms of a phobia and associated panic may include any of the following;

  • shortness of breath,
  • rapid shallow breathing,
  • irregular heartbeat,
  • excessive sweating,
  • nausea,
  • dry mouth,
  • inability to articulate words or sentences,
  • shaking,
  • feeling the need to run-away,
  • feeling faint.

Synonyms of the word toilet include: water closet, abbreviated to WC, or comfort room abbreviated to CR. An old word was lavatory, and sometimes washroom. Restroom is sometimes used, as is powder room or amenity. Another word for public toilets is comfort station. In the home it could be bathroom, or privy. A military term is latrine, can, or head. amenity. Some other old terms include crapper, or john, maybe potty, or loo.

Synonyms of the word phobia include; anxiety, aversion, distaste, dread, loathing, obsession, panic, resentment, revulsion, avoidance, detestation, disgust, dislike, fear, hatred, irrationality, neurosis, repulsion and terror.

Our deep unconscious mind is supposed to seek out threats and assess the level of danger to protect us. Sometimes it thinks the level of threat and danger is worse than it is in reality. If the irrational fear or phobia results in a panic attack, it is a panic attack which is the real threat. The phobic reaction has failed its purpose because it is not protecting at all. It is the danger because the sufferer cannot focus and think clearly.

Some old out-dated phobia treatments were called ‘desensitization’. It involved exposing the sufferer to the object of their fear over and over again. This most often caused abreactions — a type of catharsis.

.Abreactions are strong, often disturbing emotional and even physical reactions to something re-experienced from the past, as if real. Abreactions could re-traumatize rather than achieve the desired healing, particularly if there is no experienced therapist present to ‘rescue’ the patient (when listening to an MP3 at home for example).

Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuer used hypnosis to assist patients to recall and relive traumatic experiences from their past which had been repressed by the unconscious for protection. Freud then abandoned this therapy approach. Psychoanalyst Carl Jung expressed interest in abreactions as a possible way to purge trauma, but later decided it had serious limitations. Science fiction writer and founder of ScientologyL. Ron Hubbard had observed abreactive therapy in a Navy hospital. He then wrote about it in his book Dianetics, claiming it as his own invention. Truth is, it had fallen out of favor long before he picked it up. Some psychologists are experimenting with technology, such as VR goggles, to use ‘cyber desensitization’ which still persists in causing abreactions.

Welcome Life Free Of Fear of Public Toilets subliminal messages are abreaction free, so you can rest assured you are safe.

When ‘Welcome’ subliminal affirmations are used to ‘lock-in’ the deep unconscious shift achieved following one-on-one therapy with Peter Zapfella the results can be nothing less than miraculous.

The more the Welcome Life Free Of Fear of Public Toilets messages are repeated over and over, the more they are uncritically accepted by the deep unconscious. If you listen to the Welcome Life Free Of Fear of Public Toilets MP3 while sleeping, on ‘repeat’ your unconscious mind will hear this message almost 400 times every night. If you were to listen to the ‘Environmental – Lake waves’ MP3 while sleeping, you could choose to also listen to the ‘Pleasant piano and guitar melody’ and/or the  ‘Zumba’ – Latin style dance music during the day. Then your deep unconscious would hear the affirmations repeated around 800 – 1200 times, while your logical conscious mind would hear it around 60 – 90 times. That’s powerful because a message repeated enough will become a new unconscious belief.

Also because we all have different listening preferences, Welcome Life Free Of Fear of Public Toilets has a choice of foreground variants for you to choose from. ‘Click here’ to hear samples.
