Some medications and herbal supplements may interact with caffeine.
- Ephedrine is used in decongestants. By mixing it with caffeine it can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke or seizure.
- Theophylline (Theo-24, Elixophyllin) is used to decongest bronchial airways. Mixed with caffeine it can cause nausea and heart palpitations.
- Echinacea can increase the concentration of caffeine in the blood and therefore cause unpleasant side effects.
