A hangover refers to a set of symptoms that occur as a consequence of excessive alcohol drinking. Hangovers can be a ‘nightmare’ for the sufferer.
The symptoms of a hangover can include:

They say, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”. But I am about to ‘spill the beans’. A friend of mine is a keen gambler. I will leave that story in Vegas. But he told me how he also did a lot of heavy drinking with his friends while he was there. He applied the suggestions I have included in this article to his drinking on that occasion, particularly water before, during and after that night (which helps to prevent dehydration, a cause of those terrible headaches). The next morning, he was up and ready to go on the tour they had booked. His drinking mates were suffering massive hangovers and still in bed. They missed a chunk of daylight (which they somehow felt an allergic reaction) and felt ‘seedy’ well into the afternoon too. They were incredulous about his recovery, as they had all had the same amount to drink the night before. ‘They wanted to know how he had avoided the same hangover they had all experienced. Of course, his secret of success was, or is on this page.
What actually happens inside our bodies to cause a hangover?
- Excessive alcohol consumption causes several symptoms for various reasons.
- Alcohol consumption metabolizes into acetaldehyde, however excessive consumption levels do not get so high to cause all the symptoms of a hangover.
- Increase in urination frequency which leads to dehydration.
- Alcohol triggers inflammatory responses.
- Alcohol irritates the lining of the stomach.
- Causes hypoglycemia – the sudden drop in blood sugar, which brings it’s own set of Diabetes symptoms.
- It causes dilation of blood vessels
- Causes sleepiness
- Drinking interferes with brain activity during sleep. It scrambles the hormones responsible for regulating our biological clocks. This may be why a hangover can feel similar to jet lag in some ways.
- The key factor that makes a hangover more severe is “drinking to intoxication”. Some people can self-monitor and therefore control their level of alcohol intake which helps to avoid hangovers. They ‘know their limit’. Some people have a higher tolerance to alcohol than others.
Alcohol poisoning is a serious health issue and may include:
- Seizures,
- Stupor and confusion,
- Continuous vomiting,
- Difficulty breathing,
- Increased heart rate,
- Low body temperature/chills,
- Cyanotic skin (blue colour around the lips and fingernails).
Heavy consumption of alcohol upsets the brain chemistry and results in, or is caused by a wide range of emotional issues, including;
- shame,
- guilt,
- stress,
- anxiety,
- panic,
- post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD),
- depression,
- bi-polar disorder,
- sadness, disconnected, withdrawn
- loss, ignored, excluded
- hopelessness,
- helplessness,
- anger, irritability, frustration

- schizophrenia.
What physical damage can excessive alcohol cause vital organs of the body?
- Brain. Alcohol interferes with the brain’s communication pathways. Disruptions can change mood and behavior and make it more difficult to think clearly and move.
- Heart. Drinking excessive alcohol over a period of time or too much on a single occasion (such as hangovers) can damage the heart, and cause:
- Cardiomyopathy – Stretching and drooping of heart muscle.
- Arrhythmias – Irregular heart beat.
- Stroke.
- High blood pressure.
- Liver. Excessive drinking can be at cause for a variety of liver problems and inflammations including:
- Steatosis, or fatty liver
- Alcoholic hepatitis
- Fibrosis
- Cirrhosis
- Pancreas. Alcohol causes the pancreas to produce toxic substances that cause pancreatitis.
- Cancer:
According to the National Cancer Institute: “There is a strong scientific consensus that alcohol drinking can cause several types of cancer. In its Report on Carcinogens, the National Toxicology Program of the US Department of Health and Human Services lists consumption of alcoholic beverages as a known human carcinogen. - “The evidence indicates that the more alcohol a person drinks–particularly the more alcohol a person drinks regularly over time–the higher his or her risk of developing an alcohol-associated cancer. Even those who have no more than one drink per day and people who binge drink (those who consume 4 or more drinks for women and 5 or more drinks for men in one sitting) have a modestly increased risk of some cancers. Based on data from 2009, an estimated 3.5% of cancer deaths in the United States (about 19,500 deaths were alcohol related.”
Throwing up or vomiting is the human bodies way of purging itself of poison. A person who feels nausea following drinking alcohol may often feel somewhat better following a good ‘spew’. Sometimes a person suffering a hangover feels as if they might vomit, but nothing eventuates. I have found a warm drink of salty water will quickly initiate a purge of everything in the stomach, including some of the poison.
Harvard Medical School recommend the following steps to overcome a hangover;
- Drink nonalcoholic fluids, perhaps with …
- Add electrolytes to fluid, or
- Eat carbohydrates,
- When drinking avoid dark coloured alcoholic drinks in favor of clear drinks.
- Take vitamin B6.
- Eat before your drinking session.
- Drink water before, during and after your drinking session.
- Drink alcohol in moderation.
- Avoid mixing alcoholic drinks.
- Avoid cheap spirits which are generally higher in congeners. “Top shelf” spirits that are highly distilled don’t seem to cause hangovers as much as a lower-priced spirits.
- If practical walk home after drinking.
- Take a shower and drink more water before sleeping.
- Wear sunglasses when outside in the sun.
- Ginseng is known to sooth hangover irritations when taken before and during drinking sessions.
- Korean pear juice is reported effective in reducing the effects of hangover (it is claimed to reduce blood acetaldehyde levels) for some people, yet ineffective for others. Koreans also like to drink Raisin Tree Tea to hydrate following heavy drinking sessions.
- Although not yet proven effective prickly pear cactus may help to reduce the effects of hangovers when taken five hours before heavy drinking.
This is a list of things you should NOT try if experiencing a hangover.
- Avoid any and all caffeine. It only heightens anxiety when mixed with alcohol.
- Stay away from acetaminophen (Paracetamol), it will prolong the hangover and perhaps cause liver damage.
- Avoid eating greasy fried food with a hangover. Avoid eating salty food. Yes, eat but make it something light and nutritious.
- Do not drink more poison ummm alcohol.
- Do not exercise. It causes sweating and dehydration which is the opposite of what you need which is hydration – water.
- Get up, drink water and eat something light. Move around and get the blood circulating, but do not overdo it. Stay awake until you have purged all the alcohol and feel sober again.
- Do not drive or use heavy machinery.
- Pills, supplements, and beverage products marketed as amazing hangover cures are not yet proven. Until research confirming anything else the best thing is water.
According to NHS Scotland, 27 percent of men and 19 percent of women admitted to the hospital for deliberate self-harm had drunk alcohol immediately before hurting themselves. This is likely because the alcohol caused them to lose their inhibitions and behave more impulsively.

Synonyms of the word hangover include; after effects such as headache. Some times further drinking is called ‘hair of the dog’.
