In my past I have known 3 people (unknown to each other) who suffered from this mental condition. At first, they seemed ‘larger than life itself’ and great fun to be around. They appeared to have many of the qualities of charisma, but there were cracks. They could look me in the eye and confidently tell extravagant stories, where they were always the hero. In each case I realised things did not add up, and began to recognise their story telling was all in their imagination, not reality. However, they believed their own lies. It was pathological.
The problem was their friendships became superficial as others began to see through their illusions, and thin grip on reality. It was as if they were acting, not participating in life. They had no respect for truth and integrity. Manipulative and cunning, two of them became criminals.
I wonder how many people in jails suffer from antisocial personality disorder (APD) or a narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).
Charismatic people are not perfect. They are not afraid to let their vulnerabilities be seen. Like everyone they have their ‘bad’ days. True charismatic people are not afraid to show their faults either.
Sometimes their honest weaknesses can make them even more charismatic. They value truth and integrity. True charismatics have no reason to tell fibs.
Charisma has nothing to do with wealth. Although some wealthy people can appear to be charismatic. Invariably they lack the positive attributes of charisma. Some of the most non-charismatic people have financial abundance.
I see a parallel between the effect charismatic people have upon us and infatuation. We fall under their captivating spell. We become entranced because we want more of what they give us.
On that note: true charismatics are not mentally ill. From time-to-time sociopaths think they are charismatic. They use their intelligence, charm and lies to manipulate others. They use aggression and threats of harm to control others. They see themselves as superior to others, so they use people for their own ends, then spit them out when they have ended their usefulness. Sociopaths cannot accept blame for their own faults, so they lie and blame others. (In fact, they are so deluded of social consciousness they seem to believe their own lies.) Sociopath’s have little or no conscience but are able to follow social conventions when it suits their needs. If you dare oppose them, they relentlessly attack. They refer to people who do not support them as ‘the enemy’. They often attack minorities and demand unquestioning loyalty and sacrifice from their followers. (us and them divisions) They are more concerned about their own selfish needs and goals than others, although they claim to be serving the common good. We tend to see these people at or near the top of law, commerce and politics because they aspire to be ‘top dog’ for no other reason than to be ‘the boss’ and have ‘all power over others’.

At a June 2024 rally in Las Vegas, former U.S. President Donald Trump said, “I don’t care about you, I just want your vote. (After that) I don’t care (about you).” To say that to his most loyal followers at a rally is sociopathic – not charismatic.
At that same rally Trump falsely spent much of his rant insulting America’s immigrant population by describing immigrants and asylum-seekers as criminals, mentally unstable, and ‘nonproductive’ members of society. This is not how charismatics behave.
Yet, Donald Trump’s own grandfather, Friedrich, immigrated to the United States in order to evade military conscription at home in Bavaria. He apparently left a note for his widowed mother and left her in the middle of the night. Trump was later banished from the country of his birth by royal decree. In the Yukon he made his fortune running an illegal brothel for gold miners. He later died a very wealthy man from the Spanish Flu pandemic. It was this wealth that eventually passed down to his grandson Donald.
If you see the tell tail signs of a sociopath – run far and fast to avoid being ensnared in their clutches. They often leave a trail of financial failure, broken lives, and destruction behind.
Olivia Fox Cabane, author of the book “The Charisma Myth,” says charismatic people have presence. They live in the present moment – not the past (where people suffering depression go) or the future (where people suffering anxiety go). They have a thing we call Mindfulness.
They have self-power. They live beyond self-doubt and the imposter syndrome. They can accept who they are – warts and all.
They exude warmth. People even upon a first meeting, feel as if they have been unconditionally accepted as if they are a close relative or a dear friend. It is a sort of love vibe.

Researchers tell us that people who live long, and healthy lives find life ‘awesome’. They find other people and life’s experiences ‘awesome’.
People who have lived ‘near death’ experiences say they now live every day as if it is their last. They appreciate everything and everyone. They see everyone as being special and having value. In some ways these people have developed some of the traits of charisma.
We can learn how to live our lives from these people.
Some people who suffer life threatening ‘dis-ease’ also tend to suffer from depression and anxiety. They complain about life, they complain about other people. They are toxic. They poison their own minds and bodies. If you get close to them, they can potentially drain your own life force energy and poison you too. They are very much the opposite of the charismatic who gives you energy and life itself.
These toxic people can choose to change. However, they are often blinded by their own dark energies.
Which of those people do you prefer to have near you, as a friend? Which of those people do you choose to be yourself? You make the choice. No one makes it for you.
