Caffeine use can be associated with several distinct psychiatric syndromes: caffeine intoxication, caffeine withdrawal, caffeine dependence/addiction, caffeine-induced sleep disorder, and caffeine-induced anxiety disorder.

Individuals with various conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, primary insomnia, gastroesophageal reflux, pregnancy, and urinary incontinence are often advised to reduce or eliminate all caffeine use. Individuals with panic and anxiety disorders are especially sensitive to the negative effects of caffeine.

Caffeine is the most commonly used mood-altering drug in the world. More Americans are ‘addicted’ to caffeine than any other substance. It is estimated that in North America between 80 and 90 percent of adults and children habitually consume caffeine.

When we think of caffeine addiction we usually think of coffee. However, we consume caffeine in many products, including energy drinks, sodas, chewing gum, chocolate, ice cream, and tea. It is added as a flavor to various food, alcohol and tobacco products.

Caffeine consumption from soft drinks has dramatically increased over the last few decades with 70 percent of all soft drinks now containing caffeine. Mountain Dew made by Pepsi has significantly more caffeine content than Coke. Mountain Dew Baja Blast contains 72 mg per 16 ounces. Energy drinks, such as Red Line Power Rush contain as much as 350 mg caffeine in a 2.5 fluid ounce bottle.

While scientists are continuing to discover both health benefits and detriments to caffeine, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) recognizes caffeine intoxication as a clinical syndrome. According to the APAs Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, some people can experience caffeine intoxication symptoms including restlessness, nervousness, excitement, insomnia, flushed face, and gastrointestinal complaints after ingesting as little as 100 milligrams of caffeine per day. At levels of 1,000 milligrams of caffeine per day, symptoms may include muscle twitching, rapid heartbeats, abnormal electrical activity in the heart, and psychomotor agitation.

A can of Coke has 9mg of caffeine per 100ml, a can of Red Bull has exactly 32mg of caffeine per 100ml – but a can of Prime Energy drink has 56mg of caffeine per 100ml. “To put it into context, Prime contains 200mg of caffeine per drink, which is six times the amount than a regular can of coke,” Kamyra La Fauci, Senior Accredited Practicing Dietitian at Heart Smart Australia

Prime Energy and Prime Hydration cannot be legally distributed and sold in Australia. It is available online.

Caffeine dependency is both chemical and psychological. On the chemical side, when you consume caffeine the body releases adrenalin. This is the same response the body has when it is under stress; it is a powerful temporary high. But when it wears off (usually within an hour or so) you are left feeling tired with flat energy. As your energy level goes down, you feel the urge to take in more caffeine to regain the lost energy. Just like drugs of addiction, the problem is that your body quickly builds up a tolerance to caffeine, so you have to take in more of it just to achieve the same level of energy lift as before.

On the psychological side, caffeine dependency comes about in part due to the constant thoughts and feelings that run through the mind. Its like an endless loop, cycling over and over again as the imagination produces the thoughts and images that drive your urge to consume caffeine. It soon becomes a habit, possibly turning into an addiction. That is why hypnotherapy with Peter Zapfella is effective.

It does not matter where you are in the world, Peter Zapfella can help you break free of the grip of caffeine through Skype, FaceTime, Viber and FaceBook Messenger.

Those people hooked on cola cannot be far from a can or bottle of their favorite beverage. If they were cut off from a source of supply, they would start to get twitchy and suffer savage withdrawals.

If celebrating, stressed, depressed, or if nothing in particular happens; perhaps boredom they addictively reach for a can or bottle of their preferred brand or variant of cola.

American author Charles Bukowski described habitual cola addiction perfectly when writing of alcoholism: If something bad happens, you drink in an attempt to forget; if something good happens, you drink in order to celebrate; and if nothing happens, you drink to make something happen.

All cola and 70 percent of other carbonated (soda) soft drinks contain caffeine. (Coke has 9.8 mg per 100ml).

While most people natural grey with age, over time, the Marie Antoinette syndrome refers to a situation where someone’s hair suddenly turns white (canities). The name of this condition comes from folklore about the French queen Marie Antoinette, whose hair supposedly turned white suddenly before her execution in 1793. The leading causes are thought to be (1) Genetics (2) Stress (3) Auto immune disease (4) Thyroid disorder  (5) Vitamin B12 deficiency. High caffeine intake could complicate these further.

Most colas and carbonated soft drinks also contain massive amounts of sugar. I have seen several clients over the years who have a weight control problem caused by the consumption of massive amounts of sugar associated with their cola addiction.

Others drink cola and other carbonated soda/soft drinks, including the diet or ‘sugar-free’ versions for the caffeine buzz, the desire to be amped, pumped, psyched, hyped, caffeinated, aerated, inflated, enlarged; to be smarter, sharper and more focused.

Recent studies have shown that diet soft drinks can erode tooth enamel, weaken bone density and lead to a greater risk of heart attack, premature babies, weight gain, and kidney failure.
