We all have those things that sometimes frighten us or make us uneasy. Although we may try to avoid things that make us feel uncomfortable, we generally manage to carry on with life okay.
However, some people have very strong irrational, involuntary fear reactions that lead them to avoid common everyday places, situations, animals or objects even though they know logically there isnt any danger. The fear doesnt make any sense, but it seems nothing can stop it. Most individuals understand that they are suffering from an irrational fear, but are powerless to override their initial panic reaction.
When confronted with the feared situation, they may even have a panic attack, the spontaneous onset of intense fear that makes people feel as if they might stop breathing and pass out, are have a heart attack and die.
People who experience these seemingly out-of-control fears have a phobia.
Phobias are persistent irrational fears of objects or situations, with a strong desire to avoid what you fear and, in some cases, an inability to function at normal tasks in your job and in social settings.
There are three types of phobias ? agoraphobia (such as large, open spaces where there are few places to hide), social phobia (such as fear of other people, performance anxiety etc) and specific phobias (such as spiders, snakes, dogs, water, insects, flying, heights, confined spaces etc).
Somewhere between 10 ? 20 per cent of people suffer from at least one significant phobia. It is the most common mental disorder among women and the second most common in men.
Normal reactive anxiety is like feeling queasy inside the crawl space of an unexplored cave or old mine, or taking off in an airplane during a lightening storm.
A phobia is like turning down an invitation to a cousins wedding because it will be held in a multi-story building that involves using a lift, or turning down a holiday opportunity because it involves air travel.
The severity differs from one individual to another. Some individuals can simply avoid the subject of their phobia. Others find that the level of fear is so high they cannot function normally.
I had a client come to me because when driving she could not turn to the right. She could turn left, she could go straight ahead and she could reverse. Although she had studied the map before and planned a route, she was late for her appointment because she was driving around in circles trying to get to the clinic, but she could not turn to the right. Her fear of turning right was controlling her life.
Another client told me he feared his own reflection. He had no mirrors in his home. However he could not control seeing his reflection in shop windows and puddles of water.
In the past phobias were treated with expensive, slow, sometimes traumatic, and often unsuccessful systematic desensitization methods. Other methods of control included: denial, dissociation or distraction.
Symptoms can be temporarily treated with drugs such as the commonly prescribed benzodiazepines, which include Valium (diazepam), Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin (clonazepam) and Ativan (lorazepam). But the side effects are the problem ? such as drowsiness and addiction.
Remember no medication can be considered safe in all circumstances, and it is important to review your medications with your doctor from time-to-time. The risks of addiction may vary depending on the drugs you are using. It is never a good idea to quit any medication without first consulting your doctor.
You need never suffer from the debilitating effects of a phobia (intense irrational fear) and that anxiety (elevated worry) again, there is a better way.
