Description
Around the world millions of people suffer from the irrational fear of dogs.

Their fear may have had it’s beginnings in different past experiences, including: perhaps a dog chased them as a child, or they know someone who was bitten by a dog, or they themselves were bitten or frightened by a snarling, snapping dog?
Cynophobic people can be scared of dogs to the point where it affects their daily lifestyle. It may prevent them from visiting friends’ homes or taking a walk in the park.
- Do you go out of your way to avoid dogs whenever you can?
- Do dogs interfere with your daily functioning?
- Do you feel like you are about to have a panic attack when you see a dog?
- Do you recognise that your fear of dogs is unrealistic?
You may be cynophobic.
Cynophobia is from the Greek: κύων kýōn meaning”dog” and φόβος meaningphóbos or”fear”. Cynophobiais the fear of dogs. It is classified as a specific phobia, under the subtype “animal phobias“.
Although the fear of snakes and spiders is more common, the fear of dogs is especially debilitating because of the popularity of pet dogs in our homes and communities. Wandering “lost” stay dogs are a particular problem for cynophobes.
It has often been said that dogs can “smell fear”. However, studies of dogs and their sense of smell have concluded that dogs cannot necessarily smell the emotion of fear. However, they can detect other smells and see the body language movements and postures that may help them sense when a person is nervous, anxious, or afraid. In some dogs, particularly guard dogs this can cause them to “go into action”.
One time when driving across the country from the east to the west coast, I had stopped on the side of the road to sleep overnight. In the morning I found my car had a flat battery. I walked down the road until I found a farm where I could ask for a ‘jump-start’. At the farm gate I was confronted by threatening warning signs. Obviously they did not want visitors. Large ominous signs threatened trespassers would be attacked by guard dogs.
Unperturbed, I confidently opened the gate and entered. As I approached the farmhouse I could see three large dogs sleeping on the doorstep. In a friendly voice I unshakably approached the door, maintaining constant rhythm in my steps and radiating love toward them. I repeated aloud … “good dogs”. They looked my way, wagged their tails and went back to sleep. When their owner answered the doorbell, he was surprised to see me casually standing, while his three large guard dogs continued sleeping around my feet. “Good for nothing dogs. I should shoot you,” he glared. I politely explained my situation and asked him to help me start my car. He reluctantly agreed.
I had shown absolutely no fear, instead reassuring the dogs in a neighbourly voice. They had wagged their tails and otherwise ignored me. Trained guard dogs? Perhaps? But not for my unassuming confident approach.
Some sensitive cynophobes may start to have symptoms when they start thinking about dogs, while another person is just fine until exposed directly with the real thing. For others a controlled dog on a leash is fine, it is a stay or uncontrolled dog that will cause them to suffer. Typically, a cynophobe begins to experience anxiety and significant dread when exposed to a dog, and will try to avoid the situation.
Synonyms of the word dog include; pup, puppy, bitch, cur, doggy, hound, mongrel, mutt, pooch, stray, tyke, fiddo, bow wow, fido, flea bag, man’s best friend, tail-wagger
The symptoms of a phobia (which may include; extreme anxiety, dread and anything associated with panic such as shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, excessive sweating, nausea, dry mouth, inability to articulate words or sentences and shaking) are very real for the sufferer, because the unconscious mind has activated the instinctive fear reaction.
Our deep unconscious mind is supposed to seek out threats and assess the level of danger to protect us. Sometimes it thinks the level of threat and danger is worse than it is in reality. If the irrational fear or phobia results in a panic attack, it is a panic attack which is the real threat. The phobic reaction has failed its purpose because it is not protecting at all. It is the danger because the sufferer cannot focus and think clearly.
Meanwhile, the logical and analytical, executive conscious part of the mind knows that almost all dogs love humans. Some can be harmful because they have been trained as guard dogs. But they are a minority, and should be on a chain or under the control of their handler.
Some old out-dated phobia treatments were called ‘desensitisation’. It involved exposing the sufferer to the object of their fear over and over again. This most often caused abreactions — a type of catharsis. Abreactions are strong, often disturbing emotional and even physical reactions to something re-experienced from the past, as if real. Abreactions could re-traumatize rather than achieve the desired healing, particularly if there is no experienced therapist present to ‘rescue’ the patient (when listening to an MP3 at home for example).
Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuer used hypnosis to assist patients to recall and relive traumatic experiences from their past which had been repressed by the unconscious for protection. Freud then abandoned this therapy approach. Psychoanalyst Carl Jung expressed interest in abreactions as a possible way to purge trauma, but later decided it had serious limitations. Science fiction writer and founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard had observed abreactive therapy in a Navy hospital. He then wrote about it in his book Dianetics, claiming it as his own invention. Truth is, it had fallen out of favour long before he picked it up. Some psychologists are experimenting with technology, such as VR goggles, to use ‘cyber desensitisation’ which still persists in causing abreactions.

The more the Welcome Life Free Of Fear Of Dogs messages are repeated over and over, the more they are uncritically accepted by the deep unconscious. If you listen to the Welcome Life Free Of Fear Of Dogs MP3 while sleeping, on ‘repeat’ your unconscious mind will hear this message almost 400 times every night. If you were to listen to the ‘Environmental – Lake waves’ MP3 while sleeping, you could choose to also listen to the ‘Pleasant piano and guitar melody’ and/or the ‘Zumba’ – Latin style dance music during the day. Then your deep unconscious would hear the affirmations repeated around 800 – 1200 times, while your logical conscious mind would hear it around 60 – 90 times. That’s powerful because a message repeated enough will become a new unconscious belief.
